Coal
This type of mineral has special features that make it the best choice when considerable amounts of energy are required. Combustion allows movement of large turbines which in turn generate the energy needed to power electricity to cities or large industrial complexes chemicals, cement and paper, among others.
Consequently, its use is widespread in industries around the world, primarily in emerging markets where large quantities of coal are required to start their industries and to stimulate their development. According to figures from the World Coal Association, about 40 % of the electricity used worldwide comes from thermal coal.
Since 2000, global coal consumption has grown faster than any other fuel. The five largest consumers of coal are China, USA, India, Japan and South Africa which together represent 82% of total world consumption of this mineral.
COAL MARKET
The largest market for coal is Asia, which currently accounts for over 65% of global coal consumption, but China is responsible for a significant proportion of this. Many countries do not have natural resources so require import to meet their energy needs. Japan and Korea, for example, import significant amounts of thermal coal for power generation and coking coal for steel production.
